Reel Poetry

(Ages 11-13, Grades 6-8)

Take your kids on a field trip that you'll want to repeat every year!

This dynamic program of short films celebrates the art of poetry and uses film to make a broad range of poems relatable to young audiences! Supported by a special curriculum and trained facilitators, Reel Poetry gives students ages 11-13 the opportunity to view fascinating short films based on and featuring poetry from William Blake, Walt Whitman, Goethe, Schiller and others. Each “reel poem” will be followed by an interactive discussion with creative exercises. Reel Poetry is designed to give students actual experience in writing poetry, and help them develop a new understanding and appreciation for the language of poetry as expressed through the language of film.

Program includes:

Learn'd Astronomer (USA, 2007)
Tyger (Brazil, 2006)
The Ballad Battle (Germany, 2005)
The Burden of the Shadow (Romania, 2006)
Herzog and the Monsters (UK, 2006)
Common Thread (USA, 2007)
Jeu (Switzerland/Canada, 2006)

Special curriculum faxed to teachers in advance!

Program produced in collaboration with the Poetry Foundation.
