Media: Improving Tests, Scores, and Skills

This lively workshop shows you how to use media for improving children’s work in the classroom! Learn simple techniques that use film and video to awaken children’s interest in learning, stimulate critical thinking, and can help improve performance on the IOWA Basic Skills Tests.

The Chicago International Children's Film Festival's year-round education programs teach children how to “read” film and TV. We have developed methods for media education which have taught thousands of children to become selective and discerning viewers of media.
Nicole Dreiske, Founder/Artistic Director of Facets Multi-Media and the Chicago International Children's Film Festival, leads this workshop where teachers will learn:
- Teaching children the basics of media literacy – the “right way” to watch movies and TV;
- Exercises that use media to master concepts reviewed by the Iowa Basic Skills Tests;
- Media-based activities to stimulate students’ reading, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Methodologies for using media in the classroom and as homework to enhance students' educational experience in a wide range of subjects, including global culture, language arts, visual arts, and more.
